The government strategy gives a significant interest to building maintenance in line with Bahrain’s economic vision and the achievement of sustainable development goals, which provide social, economic and environmental needs to the community.

Building Maintenance Directorate (BMD) is responsible to provide maintenance to all buildings owned by 17 government entities. The directorate carries out the required maintenance works in order to maintain the safety of these buildings, prolong their life span, ensure their sustainability and increase their operational efficiency, this accomplished through the implementation of comprehensive cyclic maintenance and preventive maintenance for the buildings according to the approved management plan. In addition to that, carrying out emergency maintenance and non-scheduled requests received by the Directorate from various government entities. The maintenance in these buildings include civil, electrical and mechanical works as well the maintenance of the roof waterproofing, landscaping and structural repair works, taking into consideration the quality of the required materials, specifications and international standards.

Furthermore, BMD striving to convert the buildings (partially) into environmentally friendly green buildings. The maintenance work carried through agreement with qualified local contractors registered with the Ministry through Measure Term Contracts and Biennial Preventive Maintenance Contracts or by issuing large-scale projects through open tenders (locally).

Furthermore, BMD prepares technical reports to identify the maintenance requirements and to analyze the condition for the government buildings and supervises execution of the works in projects funded by other government entities.

The Construction Projects Directorate (CPD) is one of the main three Directorates of the Construction Projects and Maintenance (CP&M) Sector. The CPD is responsible for the design, supervision of execution, project management, and quality control of public sector building projects in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It also offers consultancy and advisory services to other ministries and government bodies including conducting structural surveys of existing buildings to ensure their safety. It contributes to the preparation of cost estimates, bids and the awarding of contracts, and oversees their implementation.

The Strategic Projects Directorate (SPD) of the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning is responsible for the management of large, complex and multi-sectoral projects from inception to hand-over to clients and during the maintenance period. Projects include dredging and reclamation, coastal engineering, airports, seaports, hospitals, sport complexes, stadiums, mosques, buildings, etc.

The Directorate engages and manages consultants to carry out the design of its projects and the supervision of the construction works. It ensures the application of state-of-the-art designs, the latest international codes and standards, value engineering practices, effective project management techniques, and quality management principles.

The Directorate exerts its best efforts in contributing towards the Ministry’s mission of providing public works services to enhance quality of life. The Directorate ensures that its projects comply with the highest international standards.
